When ChatGPT went viral, employees were already quietly using it on the job. Today, three in four workers say they use AI at work, often bringing their own tools into the office without approval.
That bottom-up trend, called Bring Your Own AI (BYOAI), creates both opportunities and risks. “The best strategy is actually to open up those lines of communication with employees,” says CM Law Partner Reena Richtermeyer. Instead of banning AI, she advises companies to set guardrails and training so employees know what’s safe and what’s off-limits.
As organizations scramble to adapt, the question isn’t if employees will use AI, it’s how companies can support them in using it responsibly.
