History Tour

Teatro Tapia at Plaza Colón

This tour explores the 500 year old walled city of Old San Juan, discovering secret corners and little-known spots full of charm and steeped in history, that remain unnoticed to the casual visitor. We will walk through Old San Juan’s blue cobblestoned streets, accompanied by a knowledgeable local architect, learning about how the city was built in this rocky island jutting out to the sea, observing the urban layout, constructive methods and architectural details of the Spanish colonial buildings and defensive structures. In this 2 hour stroll you’ll experience historical architecture with an insider, not just as a tourist, since we will be visiting private residences, convents and places with limited access. You’ll have a chance to peer into underground cisterns, wonder at frescoed chapels, climb rooftops to explore hidden towers, and bask in secluded Spanish patios.

This is a social impact experience where 100% of what you pay for this experience goes to the Puerto Rico Historic Buildings Drawing Society, a private Puerto Rico-based nonprofit organization founded in 2011, with the mission of educating the public about Puerto Rico’s history and architectural heritage and creating awareness of the need for its preservation.

active Tour

Pick up and drop off location

We will hike 25 to 30 minutes up a dirt/rock path that does include some river wading. The trail is surrounded by bamboo trees, rainforest flowers, and many other beautiful plants. Our group will stop at a collecting pool formed from the base of a waterfall. Here, you will have the chance to swim in the pool’s crystal-clear waters.

After the swim, we will continue hiking on a more intense portion of the trail that includes climbing boulders. Our destination is a river in which you can swim, jump from a rope swing, and go down natural water slides. Once the hike concludes, we will stop for lunch at a local restaurant (cost of meal is not included in the total tour price).

*Wear a bathing suit and comfortable clothes. Bring a towel and an extra pair of clothing. Tennis shoes, sneakers, or hiking boots are required while on the trail (no open-toed shoes).

Museums

The Museo de San Juan is housed within the historical building that in the 19th century served as Old San Juan’s main public market. In one wing of the museum, you’ll find a permanent exhibition tied to Puerto Rico’s history while the second wing is used for temporary exhibits.

Its mission is to offer a synoptic view of the history and culture of the American continent, emphasizing Puerto Rico, through our exhibition programs and cultural activities.

Houses the largest collection of Puerto Rican paintings from the eighteenth century to the 1960s. The museum is located in the restored Saint Aquinas monastery of the Dominican Order. The monastery along with the adjoining San José Church is one of the first significant works of architecture on the island.
