Deep fakes are inevitable. How can companies defend themselves? That’s the question CSO Magazine Contributing Writer Bob Violino asked Reiko Feaver, CM Law Partner and Technology Practice Chair.
He writes:
We’ve heard this story before. An employee gets a call from his CFO directing him to wire $700,000 to a business the company was acquiring, and he sends the wire. Problem is that the voice on the phone was not the CFO’s, but a very realistic, AI-generated deepfake, and poof, the company is out $700K.
Adding insult to injury, notes Reiko, whose practice focuses on AI, is that once a deepfake is identified, “enterprises need to be aware of applicable law. “Not just statutory laws,” she says, “but common law concepts such as negligence, tort, misrepresentation [and] fraud. Companies have to be aware of not only becoming a victim, but of their obligations if they are a victim and don’t do anything about it.”
